On the horns of a devilish dilemma

IN 1971, Gerald Mayo, a prisoner in Pennsylvania, sued Satan and his staff in a US District Court, alleging that the Prince of Darkness had many times caused misery and placed obstacles in his path.

The judge noted that the case was appropriate for a class action but dismissed proceedings on a technicality – no official precedent for suing the Devil existed and there was no sure way court papers could be served on Satan.

In the new film Suing the Devil, a law student decides to sue Satan for $8 trillion.

Satan, played by Malcolm McDowell, appears, with 10 top lawyers – “devil’s advocates” – to defend himself.

“The world is full of losers,” Satan says outside the court. “How many people are going to sue me and blame me because they can’t get their act together?”

It’s a fantasy. Satan surely does his best work by remaining in the dark and encouraging the widely held notion that he doesn’t exist.

End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.

The film’s writer and director Tim Chey said: “At a time when 65 per cent of American Christians don’t believe the devil exists, the film aims its guns at Satan’s strategy” – to remain unbelievable.

Lucifer, the devil, or whatever you call him has been conjured up in a variety of guises by theologians, poets and prophets.

Just when he became God’s adversary rather than God’s archangel creation, servant and messenger is hard to pinpoint.

Seemingly, God permitted the serpent devil to tempt Adam and Eve and made a bet with him to test Job’s loyalty. Later, in the New Testament, Jesus sits in the wilderness and is tempted by Satan.

But we don’t regard the existence of the Devil, demons, and demonic possession seriously in the Western world.

The popular view is that evil, or sin, is the privation of good. But the experience of serial killers, the gas chambers of Auschwitz and the horrors of Rwanda suggest it is more than this.

The Apostle Paul, writing in the book of Ephesians, explained that the real battle for the souls of men is in another dimension intersecting our own physical world: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms,” he wrote.

Writer C.S. Lewis stated the devil’s best trick was convincing us he does not exist.

Lewis warned of what he called “the two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils”. One error “is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them”. If that is so, why does God allow an evil entity to have influence in our lives?

Lewis surmised God created all things with free will to do right or wrong.

This was necessary because it not only made evil possible, but also love, goodness and joy.

The Dark Power went wrong, according to Lewis, because he thought he could be God. And that is the same great evil he attempts to teach humans.

Ngmoco Drops Support for Older iOS Devices

There’s been a number of games released on the App Store featuring mainstream music acts such as Lady Gaga, Metallica and Coldplay. So it didn’t really come as much of a surprise to see Linkin Park 8-Bit Rebellion arrive over the weekend. What does come as a surprise however is that this isn’t rhythm-based like most other music games, but rather a side-scrolling beat-em-up of sorts with a heavy focus on social networking. It sounds strange, and it kind of is, but it’s also quite refreshing to see something other than the expected. The result ends up being more of an interesting experience, rather than a solid game.

The story has you helping each of the six members of Linkin Park to find their stolen music track. Once all tracks have been found, they complete an exclusive new Linkin Park song which will save the world… or something like that. You’ll travel through the seven different locations in the game talking to different characters for clues and performing menial tasks that eventually lead you to each track. The gameplay is a bit shallow and repetitious, and incredibly easy. Battling enemies is done by merely mashing an action button, but there are some pretty cool weapon upgrades to help spice it up a little.

During play you’ll collect coins from defeated enemies which can be spent in the shops spread throughout the seven game settings. You can buy gear for your avatar or furniture and decorations for your apartment. There’s a heavy focus on this collection and customization aspect, and there’s lots of different items for you to buy in the game. 8 Bit Rebellion does a great job of providing fan service with this, and the real life artwork and posters of Linkin Park albums can be adorned on your apartment walls. Even better are the music tracks in the game, which are familiar Linkin Park songs that have been given the 8-bit treatment. I’m not the biggest fan of Linkin Park, but I couldn’t help but enjoy the retro versions of their songs. There’s eight songs in total, and during the game you’ll unlock all the original versions of them as well so you can compare them to the 8-bit remakes.

What really shines about this game is the online component. You’re constantly connected while playing, and you’ll see the avatars of players from around the world walking around inside of your game. At any time you can tap on one which brings up a menu to check out their profile, “poke” them á la Facebook, or even engage in real time chat with them. It’s fun to see these people roaming around, and I’ve already run across some familiar usernames from people in our forums. Each level even has a bulletin board where anyone can post a message for all to see. Full Facebook and Twitter integration are included so you can post various game accomplishments and search out friends. If none of this sounds appealing to you, the entire game can be played just fine offline.

If you’re a fan of Linkin Park, you’ll likely get a lot of enjoyment from playing through 8-Bit Rebellion. The gameplay is a little too simplistic for serious gamers, but it can still be fairly entertaining at times. It’s almost as if River City Ransom, Zombieville and Facebook decided to make a game based on their love for Linkin Park. In reality it feels like the type of game that actually would be played on a social network like Facebook. If this sounds interesting to you, you’re definitely getting a high quality experience that’s been designed beautifully to suit the iPhone interface. If you’re not a huge fan of the band, however, 8-Bit Rebellion may just be a little too flimsy to hold your attention.

Diego Della Valle

The Milan headquarters of Tod’s is an austere building in the centre of the city that discreetly bears the name of the Della Valle family, who founded the small shoe factory in the Marche region of Italy in the early years of the last century. Successive generations have developed the brand to unimagined heights. Today, under the stewardship of the group’s president and chief executive Diego Della Valle, it is a luxury goods behemoth.

Dragon, Fly soars with Tiny Wings

Similar to Tiny Wings, the incredibly popular iOS game, Dragon, Fly! for Android revolves around a flightless baby dragon who slides down hills to gain momentum and launch himself high into the clouds. The intermittent gliding may seem like a cheap substitute for sustained flight, but the sequential dives and climbs sure make for a funAndroid game.

Your goal in Dragon, Fly! is to venture as far as possible before your overprotective Dragon Mum catches you and takes you home. Along your journey, you can pick up jewels, explore new realms, and slide along increasingly difficult topographies. Then, once you develop your “flight” skills, you’ll be able to Swoosh, and eventually achieve Fire Mode to boost your point total exponentially.

Sure, Dragon, Fly! may not be quite as sharp or attractive as the iOS hit that it mimics, but it’s still really fun and addictive. In fact, we would venture to say that as of now, it is the best Tiny Wings clone in the Android Market. Download this free game without hesitation.

Time for Three trio defies definition, spans musical genres

Take a look at Time for Three’s publicity photos, or scan its hip play- list, with versions of tunes by rapper Kanye West and British singer-songwriter Imogen Heap, and one might mistake it for a pop group.

But the three string musicians, who met as students at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, are actually anchored in the classical world, and blurring musical distinctions is what they are all about.

This 11-year-old, category-busting ensemble, which is just as at home in the country, Gypsy and jazz realms as it is with Franz Schubert or Felix Mendelssohn, returns Monday to Boulder’s Colorado Music Festival for a busy five-day residency. Its activities, which range from an improvisation workshop to a free afternoon conversation with fans to two concerts with the festival’s orchestra, show not only its versatility but also its accessibility.

“Because Time for Three is sort of an outside-the-box group, we’re able to reach an audience that isn’t standard,” bassist Ranaan Meyer said by phone after finishing a sound check for the first of two concerts with folk singer Arlo Guthrie and the Indianapolis Symphony.

A growing number of people in the classical world believe that at least part of the answer to aging audiences and dwindling relevance lies with an up-and-coming generation of tech-savvy musicians who are as comfortable in a rock club as in a concert hall.

For these musicians, daily intersections of styles and influences seem completely natural, and they have little to do with the sometimes awkward and not especially successful crossover projects that some classical artists have attempted in the past.

“Artists are being forced to think more creatively than in decades past,” Meyer said. “For us, a lot of the things we’re doing are arrangements of material that are current and mainstream, but we’re doing it in a way in which we really think about our message from beginning to end and not just cash in in a

typical crossover way.”

Time for Three’s jump to prominence came in 2003, when two of its members — violinist Zachary “Zach” De Pue and Meyer — were performing in the Philadelphia Orchestra.

Quick thinking

When the the power went out during a thunderstorm and technicians were scrambling to restore lighting, the two came to the rescue with an impromptu jam session. They performed such tunes as “Jerusalem’s Ridge” and “Ragtime Annie,” winning over the audience.

Time for Three has since returned as guest artists with the Philadelphia Orchestra and performed with other symphonies across North America and Europe. In 2009, it began a three-year residency with the Indianapolis Symphony, which includes a series of “happy hour” concerts for younger audiences.

The group’s niche is performing its distinctive arrangements of tunes such as Heap’s “Hide and Seek” or Ervin Rouse’s roots fiddle classic “Orange Blossom Special” or its own pieces infused with its varied influences.

“It’s a lot of fun, and it’s different, and it’s not the normal thing that audiences are expecting,” Meyer said.

In appearances Thursday and Aug. 5 with the Colorado Music Festival Orchestra, the program will also include the premiere of “Simply Blue,” a work by Meyer and Time for Three’s producer, Steven Hackman, which draws on such jazz greats as Bill Evans, Dave Brubeck and Miles Davis.

Searchweb searchAsk Answer Discover Search for questions: Advanced Search My ProfileHome > Answer a Question 2 Preview your answer No Country QuestionHow come muslims are very bad at sports?Hello, in my world culture unit in school we are doing a project on how each race has unique talents which make them a valuable demographic to a larger unified world. I chose to convey this doctrine by showing a variety of different ethnic groups with specific examples and what they excel at. So far my project incorporates Michael Phelps(Caucasian-USA) as the best swimmer and proven greatest athlete of the world of all time, Hussein Bolt(n^e^g^r^o-Jamaica) as the up and coming short distance superstar and arguably the second greatest athlete of all time, Yao Ming(Han Chinese-China) as one of the most dynamic modern basketball players in the National Basketball Association, George St. Pierre(Caucasian-Canada) and Anderson Silva(n^e^g^r^o-Brazil) as the single two greatest mixed martial artists to grace the sport (I’m not talking about theatrical spectacle such as Jacky Chan or Bruce Lee, rather actual proficiency in the sport of MMA), Mark Spitz(Caucney Jew-USA) as the second greatest swimmer of all time after Michael Phelps, and a plethora of less notable examples from a variety of different ethnicities. What I have noticed is that Muslim people haven’t achieved anything at all in the realm of sports, and I am trying to understand the reasoning behind this. I know ultra orthodox muslims do not partake in a lot of sports because it conflicts with their extremist beliefs, especially the women who can’t really wear any sort of athletic uniform without being beaten in the streets by their “owners”. But I go to school with a lot of Muslims, and they really aren’t good at anything pertaining to athletics; I am on the wrestling team there are a few muslim kids in my weight class and a few in heavier weight classes, and I have never had trouble plowing through them. I don’t intend for this to sound hateful or vulgar, rather I’m pursuing an explanation as to why muslims suck at sports. Also I was hoping that Muhammad Ali was muslim so I could use him as an example for my project, BUT ethnically he is n^e^g^r^o not arab, and as it turns out he is an agnostic, not muslim. So no Muhammad Ali is just another black guy who is great at his chosen sport.Edit: Yahoo answers is flawed and changed the word n^e^g^r^o to ******.N^e^g^r^o is the ethnic classification of my people, I don’t understand why YA! would conflict with this.
