Hell to pay

Hell, it has to be said, has not of late had the media attention that once it commanded.

Brimstone is seldom mentioned.

That has now changed with not one but two references to the inferno in a political context.

Firstly, Chancellor Alistair Darling said that the “forces of hell” had descended upon him after he forecast in 2008 that the worst recession for 60 years was upon us.

In retrospect, that looks like comparative optimism.

At the time, though, it was regarded as a betrayal of his party’s Panglossian verdict that all remained for the best in the best of all possible worlds.

According to Mr Darling, Downing Street formed part of the hellish legion sallying out to attack him.

Presumably, some eager Special Adviser saw it as his/her role to put the Chancellor of the Exchequer right. David Cameron reckons it was the departed Damian McBride.

Or, perhaps, Alistair had one of those full and frank exchanges with his neighbour for which Number 10 is so renowned.

Gordon Brown insists he never instructed any briefing against his Cabinet colleague.

But that hellish image? I mean, come on.

Can you think of anyone – anyone at all – in the Prime Minister’s present circle who could conceivably adopt the role of Mephistopheles: the Prince of cunning, the champ of calculation, the lord of manipulation? No, thought not.

Alistair Darling, I think we may safely assert, was speaking figuratively.

It fell to me to interview the Chancellor in his Edinburgh home on the morning in 2008 when the row broke.

He looked notably drawn and tense, certainly. but there was nothing to indicate that the origins of this were anything other than worldly.

Speaking figuratively

To our second hellish reference, then.

Did you catch the Cardinal on GMS this morning?

Keith O’Brien said he had advised Labour’s Holyrood leader Iain Gray that he hoped the Pope had a word or two with him during his planned Scottish visit.

To be precise, he said to Mr Gray:

“I hope he gives you hell for what has happened over the last 10 years.”

He was speaking figuratively, wasn’t he? Of course he was.

Cardinal O’Brien was suggesting, strongly, that Labour had departed from Christian principles in areas such as the family and marriage.

He was responding to a speech by the Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy in which he sought to reach out to those of faith.

“Reach out”, that is, by persuading them to vote Labour.

Lest there be any doubt, Mr Murphy was quite explicit here.

He was not merely seeking to engage with faith groups.

He explained that Labour had a lead over the Tories among the religiously committed at the last General Election – and that required to be “replicated”.

This, said Mr Murphy, could be done by an effort to “reflect and respect their values and aspirations.”

Philosophical dichotomy

The Scottish Secretary was addressing diverse faith groups, including those which are salient in his own East Renfrewshire constituency.

He was in no way confining his comments to the Roman Catholic Church.

However, it was the Scottish Catholic leader who responded most vigorously.

Right, said the Cardinal, if you’re respecting our values, let’s start with tax breaks for marriage. and civil partnerships – we’re not happy. and abortion……

It strikes me that there is a philosophical dichotomy underlying all this.

They base those convictions upon a credo, what they hold to be revealed divine truth.

For example, when seeking a foundation for their way of life, those in the Judaeo-Christian tradition will turn to Exodus and Deuteronomy, not a party manifesto or think tank or focus group.

Those of faith seek to spread those beliefs, to inculcate faith in others: these days, mostly by evangelism – although there are occasions, in history and today, when more directly persuasive means have been deployed by some.

Theocracy or democracy

Crucially, the views of faith groups are not altered by changes in society nor by opposition from a predominantly secular community.

Indeed, they may often be strengthened by such criticism.

They cannot, must not, act without the fiat of the people. If they do not follow that course, they are ejected from office.

The can listen to the views of faith leaders. Of course, they can. but they will always balance those views with other elements in society, reaching a view which, they hope, best reflects prevailing opinion and the best course of action.

I suspect that Cardinal O’Brien, being an astute, intelligent man, knows that perfectly well.

Indeed, he insisted that he did not expect political parties to follow his dictat. he knows well that would be a theocracy, not a democracy.

However, he was understandably taking an opportunity, presented by Mr Murphy’s speech, to advance the agenda of his particular faith group.

King of Kings 3 Fights Way to North America

Epic battles, sprawling cities, and warring kingdoms locked in a never-ending struggle for power. King of Kings 3, the newest instalment of the popular Taiwanese MMORPG series, is considered one of the best releases of 2009 and captivates millions of players in Asia. In addition to holding the European publishing rights, gamigo is proud to announce that it now holds the North American license for the game.

“As a globally-focused publisher, our aim is to be able to offer our games in all key markets,” says Patrick Streppel, member of gamigos executive board. “King of Kings 3 is one of the highlights of our portfolio. The emphasis of the game is on PvP battle and the extensive guild features, such as the building of guild towns and guild warfare, are unparalleled in the realm of free-to-play gaming.”

The games developing studio, Lager, and gamigo have been working hard the past year to localise the game for Western markets. The plot of the game has been completely rewritten and the seven fantasy realms are based on medieval powers, giving players from Europe and North America the opportunity to go into battle for their nation. a complete re-balancing reduces grinding and now allows players to reach the highlights of the game, PvP and guild gameplay, more quickly.thanks to the games complex and multilayered guild system, guilds band together first to form legions, next kingdoms, and finally alliances to wage war against enemy kingdoms and territories. up to 10,000 players compete simultaneously in truly epic RvR battles to determine the fate of the guild towns and realms. Only the bravest warrior will come out on top and become the ruler of the entire realm, the fabled King of Kings.

King of Kings 3 is expected to go into Closed Beta testing in the second quarter of 2010. to participate in Closed Beta testing, visit the games official website: http://kok3.gamigo.com

Colosimo staying put for finals

SIMON Colosimo has confirmed he won’t be going anywhere until after the completion of Sydney FC’s finals campaign, ending speculation he was set to cut ties with the club before the Japanese and Chinese transfer windows shut at the end of the week.

The news will come as a boost for coach Vitezslav Lavicka, who would be loath to take Colosimo from his defensive set-up, where the 31-year old has returned to arguably career-best form.

But, the prospect of Colosimo staying in Sydney after the grand final appears almost non-existent.

While he is understood to have agreed to a three-year deal with Melbourne Heart and has a long-stated desire to one day return to his home town, his goal of representing Australia at this year’s World Cup arguably hinges on his ability to find an overseas deal for the next three months.

Colosimo comes out of contract at the end of March but it is believed that should he find a deal with an overseas club, Heart will be forced to relinquish any claim on the player.

It’s a delicate situation for the ex-Perth Glory captain but he is determined to win what would be the first championship of his career before departing overseas.

”The status right now is I’m working closely with ‘Vitja’ and we’re openly talking about these things. I’ve said all along that if we’re there until the grand final, I will be here,” Colosimo said. ”I had some really disappointing years in Perth – not having a go at them, that’s more about myself – and now that I’ve won a minor premiership, I want to win a grand final. That’s my main focus.

”If other things eventuate, then I’ll be straight up about it. [The club] are fully supportive of me and I’ve got no qualms.”

On paper, the most logical option for Colosimo after the grand final is to head to Korea, where Australian players have been embraced by K-League clubs – though not always with prime results – as a result of the three-plus-one rule, and where the transfer window remains open until March 28.

Yet while Colosimo concedes Korea is still his most likely destination, the opportunity to move to China or Japan is not beyond the realms of possibility when he becomes a free agent.

”I could have signed somewhere else and just start-dated it later. that could have happened,” Colosimo said. ”There’s opportunities in those three regions but which one is going to fit the bill will probably depend on when we finish.”

Asked if this meant an overseas deal had already been done, the defender re-affirmed it wasn’t the case. ”I don’t have anything [yet]. what I’m saying is that although the windows have closed, because I’m coming out of contract, there’s loopholes to make it happen,” he said.

One man who will be intent on keeping Colosimo’s championship dreams at bay is Wellington goalkeeper Liam Reddy, who has signed with Sydney FC for next season but, quite literally, will stand between the Sky Blues and their hopes of a grand final appearance on Saturday night.

Quizzed whether he would be pleased by a good performance from his future goalkeeper, Lavicka replied that it was a difficult conundrum. ”I’ve thought about it, I watched their game [against Newcastle] and he did a very good job,” Lavicka said. ”He has also been good not just in that game but in the last part of the season for Wellington, just like their whole team.

”It will be interesting to play against him on Saturday, but we have a real intention and a big desire to win.”

Mortal Kombat – Deception [PC/ISO]
English | Developer: Midway | ISO | 1Gb
Genre: Fighting

Mortal Kombat: Deception is a fighting game developed and published by Midway as the sixth installment for the Mortal Kombat (MK) series. Deception was developed for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox in October 2004, while a Nintendo GameCube version waspublished in March 2005. Mortal Kombat: Deception follows the storyline from the fifth installment, Deadly Alliance; it features the revival of the Dragon King Onaga, who starts conquering the realms featured in the series after defeating the Deadly Alliance, the sorcerers Quan Chi and Shang Tsung who were the main antagonists in the previous game, and the Thunder God Raiden, defender from realm. as such, the surviving warriors from the previous titles join forces to confront Onaga.

26 characters are playable in the game with 9 making their first appearance in the series. Deception contains several new features in the series such as chess and puzzle games with the MK characters and an online mode. The Konquest Mode role-playing game (RPG) already shown in Deadly Alliance now follows the life of Shujinko, a warrior who is deceived by the Onaga to make a search of forty years to give him more powers while he trains with several characters from the series. during November 2006, Midway released Mortal Kombat: Unchained, a port for the PlayStation Portable, which added new characters to the game.

Co-creator from the series Ed Boon mentioned that Deception was made to be an unpredictable fighting game as it gives new features such the mini-games and the Konquest Mode which has now more interaction with the plot from the series. several parts from Deadly Alliance such as combos, or arenas were redesigned to be more realistic as well as more interactive. Deception has been well received by video game reviewers, who praised the fights and the new features. However, the Konquest Mode also received criticism for poor voice acting. several publications have also awarded the game as the best fighting game from 2004.

Free Realms Tops 9 Million Users

Sony today announced its free-to-play MMO “Free Realms” has broken the 9 million registered players mark.

Grounds for celebration

The game has exploded since it released, growing from a very healthy 3 million in June of last year to now this gargantuan figure over three times larger.

“With Free Realms, we’ve been able to reflect the needs and wants of our players by keenly listening to their suggestions and feedback,” said John Smedley, president of SOE.

“We believe the persistent exercise of capturing in-game research inside Free Realms has been a huge contributing factor as to why we’ve attracted over nine million players in less than a year. it truly helps us give our players a game where they can do and be whatever they want.”

SOE chalked the success up to “continuous development of new features and themed in-game events, as well as persistent marketing support” and the advent of Rides.

These Rides are like World of Warcraft’s mounts. They’re available to paying members and include T-Rexes and Dragons that afford the user up to 150 percent speed when riding them.

I played the title only slightly when it released just to see what all the hubbub was about and now my 11-year-old sister plays the Hell out of it. Anybody else?
